* I've come to the conclusion I Just. Don't. Like. FlickR. It's a hassle to navigate through the settings and the time spent uploading and batch editing is a time consuming pain in the ass.
* We watched Freedom Writers this past weekend. Excellent movie, I highly recommend it. On another day we watched DreamGirls and had mixed feelings about this one. The singing, of course, was stellar, and I had no idea Jennifer Hudson could act so well either. Outstanding performances by Eddie Murphy and Jamie Foxx, and I always like to see Danny Glover on the screen. However, we just couldn't get into this movie, found it hard to feel passionate about the characters and ended up fast forwarding through most of it. Maybe it was our mood, but I don't think I'll run out to rent it again.
* I read The Lovely Bones by Alice Sebold with some hesitation, as I had heard it was about the rape and murder of a 14 year-old by a serial killer. However, the story is so much more than just that one scene and I found it oddly comforting to think about life and death in the way that Sebold leads us to believe.
The victim -I have a hard time thinking of her as a victim now that I have grown to love her ghost so much more- is Miss Susie Salmon, "like the fish" and she lets us know in the very first line of the story that she was murdered on December 6,1973, and she's very matter of fact about it all.
I was instantly on guard, wondering how on earth anyone could recommend it but I am so glad I read it. I could see pieces of myself in some of the characters, and of the people I know as well. I think you might also... you never know!
* I Feel Bad About My Neck by Nora Ephron was excellent in the first chapter, which was about uh...her neck. I felt bad about her neck too. And mine, because it looks less and less like my neck and more and more like another neck is moving in. Still, I'm comfortable with my old neck, it has held up my head for 45 years and still gets that satisfying crunchy crackling noise when I roll it backward and all around, which I do from time to time out of habit and also to annoy Richard, who can't stand the sound of it.
Hahahha! Oh the fun little bits of ammunition the body provides us with....
However, the second chapter of the story is all about how she hates her purse. The narrative does not change at all, and by the third chapter, which was all about Serial Monogamy, I put the book down because I had an overwhelming feeling that I was stuck on the couch with someone who would Not Stop Talking while I was trying to read the book. ARRRGH! I have a feeling this one is best read in small doses, that you'd pick it up as you would a newspaper and read the column of the day. And then you'd close the newspaper, or the book in this case, and move along. Chapter 4 is about "Maintenance" and I'll read that one while waiting for the girls while I'm stuck in the car line this afternoon.
* People, it was 66 degrees here this morning. IN Florida. IN May! Unheard of!! My God, it felt good. Gonna be 80something by 5 p.m so we'll take what coldness we can get.
If you've read any of these books or movies or have one to tell me about, open up the comments and by all means, let loose!
