Update: Welp, the yard sale to raise $$$ for Katrina/Rita relief is underway as I type this at 12:30. The crowd is thinning out a little, they tend to come in waves. Every so often the traffic will die back, and then a whole bunch of people will show up at once. The Catholic Church a block away is having a fundraiser sale also, so we're taking advantage of their traffic.
I snuck in the house to get some A/C. It's HOT out there! We're up to $157. so far. There's a shortage of coffee pots, apparently. People keep asking us if we have any for sale.
One of our biggest sellers is the ice cold water that we have in a cooler for 50cents a bottle. It's selling out and I think we should have charged a buck, actually.
Ok i'm going back out there. You have no idea how much I hate holding yard sales. lol.
Update II: I'm just plain BEAT. The heat is oppressive, really wipes you out. We finally closed it up around 1:30 because the traffic had all but died off. We raised $182. and change, so I'm going to top it off for $200. Not bad at all. One of these days I'm going to write about the cheapskates that drive expensive cars and wear expensive jewelry but won't pay a dime more than a buck for a $2. item. (grumble) Good grief, what is it with you people? We had signs everywhere that said: "Donations" and "Fundraiser for Katrina Relief" (etc etc)
and you're arguing about a dollar?
Oh forget about 'em. The girls had a good time and learned a lot about cheap people raising money, advertising and hard work. Part of the reason for closing early was also that we had the Biggest Game of the Year to watch -- Gators were playing Kentucky. My dad always called every game "the biggest game of the year" and that's what I tell my kids today.
The Gators were doing so well we felt ok about leaving after haltime, had to go shopping for a certain person's birthday tomorrow. Let me just add real quick that Gator Quarterback Chris Leak is AMAZING. I'm already planning for his career as the Buc's Quarterback when he's ready to go Pro. My PR campaign will start soon.
I'll skip the details of the rest of the afternoon because I just realized it was coming out in diary format. We did make history when hub went grocery shopping with me and didn't ring up the bill. I usually leave him home when he's hungry.
By the way: solar powered A/C needs to become a common item in today's homes. It needs to be refined so that you can set the temperature so that it's just as cold as you please.
That'll go a long way with the fuel prices today. Where are all the Bill Gates of the Solar Power Industry? Get with it ladies and gentlemen, let's make it a mainstream feature on any home. I want to be able to see a franchise on every street corner. Kinda like Walgreens is here.
By the way II: Buddy is on a diet and it's hard on him. We had chinese food for dinner and he had to cut back on his usual servings of sweet and sour chicken, which he loves. More details to come....
stay tuned.
I just realized I can't go to bed because Samantha is out with friends and I've got to wait till she gets home. The reality is that 5 minutes after I click "log out" on this website, I"ll be asleep on the couch with drool running down my arm. She better wake me up. But not till I finish my dream about Leak throwing 6 TD's to win the superbowl for the Bucs...
What a sweet gesture. You'll be happy to know that our city, county, state and fed government did NOT let us down! Everyone pulled together and stayed ahead of things. Houston performed the largest ever evacuation in this country's history - 2.5 million approximately.
Take care.

When I go to the bank for cash, I often ask for a bunch of fives and ones.
That way, when I am at a yard sale around noon (which is as early as I want to be out and about on a Saturday), and the hostess is looking hot and beat, then I pull out a one and say "would you take a dollar for this?"
It seems more polite than to haggle and quibble and then ask for change.
And I never wear my one and only gold bracelet while shopping. It makes for a wrong impression if I do hassle the seller.
I hear ya on the 'last one ever' sale thing. I said the same words about 10 years ago, and I still hold to it. Anything that needs removed from the house either goes to the thrift store or the curb. I get tired of thinking about clutter.

We live on a corner lot and started to put stuff out with a "free" sign on it on Saturday mornings - out by 9 and gone by 12. Only once have we had to dispose of it otherwise. :)

That was great raising funds for Katrina relief! And I hear you about "the last one ever". All our "stuff" goes the the Salvation Army now - and it's a write off.
It a good feeling to know you helped, though - so many will appreciate it.
